District #209 students got a once in a lifetime experience at school on Monday, August 21st as they experienced a nearly "total" eclipse.  For the first time in many years, people living in our area were able to experience one of nature's most awe-inspiring sights as the moon passed over the sun for just a few minutes midday.

Students at WHS were on a shortened schedule then dismissed to Study Hall (while "Total Eclipse of the Heart" filled the hallways) where they got to head outside with classmates and experience the eclipse.  Protective glasses were provided and students were instructed as to the proper way to put on the glasses.  Classes were out on the lawn sitting on blankets, playing frisbee, or busy chatting about this unique experience.  The moment that the street lights came on and the crickets were chirping was definitely an exciting one!

At WGS, parents were invited to share this experience with their children.  Students in grades K-4 had to have a parent to go out and view the eclipse. Many of the parents/grandparents joined the fun! Students in grades 5-8 had to have parent permission to view the eclipse.  The students that went out made plates and decorated them and then slid their safety glasses through them.  Doing this helped protect them more and they enjoyed making them.  Students also had glow necklaces provided by Snack Shack.  Those students that stayed inside were able to view the eclipse live.  All the teachers prepared the students ahead of time with information about the eclipse and the safety procedures to take while viewing the eclipse.

All district students were served Moon Pies and Sun Chips with their lunches today! Overall, today was a great day to be in Woodlawn!
